Infant Killed, Several Hospitalized After Collision at Shafter and Burbank
Shafter, CA (July 28, 2022) – Cruz Carrillo Olvera, a 48-year-old passenger, suffered injuries following a suspected car accident that occurred in the area of Shafter Avenue and Burbank Street
The Bakersfield Now News reported two vehicles collided at the intersection in Shafter Saturday afternoon. Preliminary investigation revealed Irving Rodriguez-Barraza was driving a 2004 Dodge Ram heading east on Burbank Street. When the Dodge drove through the intersection, it crashed into a 2017 Jeep heading north on Shafter.
Shortly after 4:30 p.m., rescue teams arrived at the accident scene. First responders found the Jeep disabled at an almond orchard northeast of the intersection. According to the article published online, the Jeep slammed into two poles, and an almond tree; then overturned on its left side.
5 Badly Injured in Shafter DUI Crash
Emergency crews found a 1-year-old unconscious, and five other people suffering in injuries. Paramedics rushed all six patients to Kern Medical. The infant later sadly succumbed to her injuries, and died. Meanwhile, the other victims, including Cruz Carrillo Olvera, received treatment for moderate to major injuries.
After the investigation, authorities determined Irving Rodriguez-Barraza was intoxicated at the time of the collision. Police then arrested the suspect for causing the crash and is under suspicion for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Detectives continue to determine several unclear factors surrounding the unfortunate event.
