Crystal Geer Injured, Man Killed After Truck Plows Into Homeless Encampment
MERCED (April 9, 2020) – A man was killed and woman was injured after a big rig plowed into a homeless encampment near Highway 99 Wednesday.
California Highway Patrol identified the wounded victim of the April 8 accident as 38-year-old Crystal Geer, a resident of Merced.
The incident began when 25-year-old Mason Myrick, of Hanford, was operating a semi-truck in the No. 2 lane on southbound Highway 99.
At the same time, a Cadillac sedan driven by 21-year-old Omar Govea, of Merced, was traveling in the No. 1 lane north of Childs Avenue.
Big Rig Hits Merced Encampment Near Highway 99
Officers said one of the drivers involved allegedly conducted an unsafe lane change. The tractor-trailer then spun out of control and swerved off the roadway.
According to The Merced Sun Star, the big rig struck the man and Geer who were sleeping in the encampment at the time. The area is located near oleander bushes and railroad tracks.
Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene. His name has not been yet released pending notification of next of kin.
Medical personnel treated Geer at the site for minor injuries. CHP reported the incident at 9:42 p.m. and found the truck about 40 feet west of the southbound lanes following the crash.
Meanwhile, Myrick and Govea did not suffer any wounds in the wreck. Authorities forced the No. 2 lane to shut down due to the accident. The tragic collision remains under investigation.
