Officers said one of the drivers involved allegedly conducted an unsafe lane change. The tractor-trailer then spun out of control and swerved off the roadway.

According to The Merced Sun Star, the big rig struck the man and Geer who were sleeping in the encampment at the time. The area is located near oleander bushes and railroad tracks.

Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene. His name has not been yet released pending notification of next of kin.

Medical personnel treated Geer at the site for minor injuries. CHP reported the incident at 9:42 p.m. and found the truck about 40 feet west of the southbound lanes following the crash.

Meanwhile, Myrick and Govea did not suffer any wounds in the wreck. Authorities forced the No. 2 lane to shut down due to the accident. The tragic collision remains under investigation.
