1 Killed, 1 Seriously Injured in Cupertino Crash on Northbound Interstate Highway 280
CUPERTINO, CA (May 16, 2021) – A DUI crash on the Interstate Highway 280 killed a woman and seriously injured a man in Cupertino.
According to The Mercury News and KTVU News, the tragic accident occurred on Saturday night. Officers reported the wreck shortly after after 11 p.m.
The incident happened on May 15 when a Nissan Ultima and a Nissan Sentra collided in Cupertino. They crashed on northbound Interstate Highway 280, south of Wolfe Road.
The California Highway Patrol said both vehicles then went off the roadway due to the impact. The Ultima slammed into a tree while the Sentra came to a stop with front-end damage.
DUI Driver Hits Another Car Near Wolfe Road
Firefighters along with the paramedics responded and pronounced the female passenger in the Ultima dead at the scene.
CHP added that the male driver of the same car sustained major injuries as a result of the collision. Medical personnel rushed him to a hospital for treatment.
The names of the deceased and wounded parties have not been yet released. Meanwhile, CHP found the man driving the Sentra and determined he was under the influence of alcohol at the time.
Authorities soon arrested and booked him into Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of DUI. They added that the suspect had two previous DUI convictions.
Officials forced the Wolfe Road off-ramp from the Interstate Highway 280 to shut down for about four hours following the wreck. The fatal Cupertino crash is still under investigation.
