Dale Pumphrey ID'd as Tow Truck Driver Killed on State Route 125 in Spring Valley

Fatal New Year’s Eve Crash on SR-125

SPRING VALLEY, Calif. (Jan. 2, 2024) – Dale Alan Pumphrey, 63, of El Cajon, has been identified as the tow-truck driver fatally struck while removing a disabled car on State Route 125 on New Year’s Eve in Spring Valley.

The deadly crash occurred at around 10:02 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 31st, according to the San Diego Medical Examiner.

Dale Pumphrey was working to remove a gold Toyota Camry from State Route 125, just north of Jamacha Road. He was loading the car onto a white 2014 Hino flatbed tow truck on the shoulder of the highway when he was hit by a driver in a Toyota Prius. The car also hit the left, rear-end of his tow truck.

Paramedics responded and pronounced Dale Pumphrey deceased on scene. Meanwhile, the driver in the Toyota stopped and cooperated with authorities.

Investigators do not suspect drugs and/or alcohol were a factor in the fatal crash, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP is working on the case.
