Daniel Joseph Corona, 61, ID’d as Suspect in La Mesa Fatal DUI Crash on University Avenue
LA MESA, CA (September 1, 2021) – Authorities detained Daniel Corona after a fatal DUI crash on University Avenue in La Mesa.
Police determined that the 61-year-old La Mesa man was under the influence of drugs when he crashed into a building on July 28.
The incident began when Daniel Joseph Corona was driving an SUV east in the 7300 block of University Avenue in La Mesa. He lost control of the car and swerved off the road near Yale Avenue.
Police said Daniel Corona then crossed a sidewalk and plowed into a commercial building housing Golden Life ADHC Center. The office is in front of Helix Charter High School.
DUI Driver Hits Building, Kills Braden Jockmyhn
In the process, the vehicle struck an employee inside the office. The victim, 41-year-old Braden Jockmyhn, died at the scene.
The San Diego Union-Tribune and FOX 5 News wrote that the accident took place at around 5:30 p.m. Firefighters along with the paramedics extricated Daniel Corona from the wreckage.
Medical personnel took the suspect to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Police soon arrested and took him into custody.
They booked Daniel Corona into the San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter, DUI and three felony drug charges.
Authorities later set his bail at $1 million. The La Mesa DUI crash is still under investigation. Anyone with information can call the police at 619-667-1400.
