Evelyn McCubbins, 13, Fatally Injured in Crash Caused by Reckless Driver
LOCATION: San Andreas, Calaveras County
DATE OF COLLISION: Tuesday, September 4th
September 5, 2018- According to the California Highway Patrol, a 13-year-old teenage girl was killed and five others were injured following a 4-car collision yesterday morning on Highway 49.
At roughly 9:00 a.m., the driver of a 2016 Chevy Silverado ID’d as Klayton Powell, 25, of Jamestown, had been traveling northbound before allowing his vehicle to veer into southbound lanes initially making contact with an older GMC Yukon driven by Matthew Coldwell, 45, of Mountain Ranch.
The Chevy pinball off of Coldwell’s vehicle and struck a Saturn driven by Daniel McCubbins, 37, of Copperopolis, who had also been accompanied by Jennifer McCubbins, 37, and Evelyn McCubbins, 13, which forced their Saturn to lose control and leave the road down an embankment.
Powell’s vehicle struck a third vehicle, a 2017 International manned by Brayan Morales, 26, causing Powell’s vehicle to fly off the road and overturn down an embankment.
The aftermath of the wreck tragically left the teenage girl in the Saturn with fatal injuries as she was pronounced at the scene.
Daniel McCubbins and Jennifer McCubbins Seriously Injured
Both Daniel and Jennifer McCubbins suffered very serious injuries for which they were each airlifted to Memorial Hospital and last said to be in critical condition.
Meanwhile, Powell, Morales, and Coldwell all complained of minor injuries and declined to be transported via ambulance to a hospital, according to the CHP report.
Following the accident, authorities shut down Highway 49 for nearly three hours until reopening at around 12:30 p.m.
At this time, no information has been released in regards to whether drugs or alcohol were contributing factors as those pieces are still being looked into at this time.
