Darrell Jewett, 34, ID’d as Suspect in Whittier Fatal DUI Hit-and-Run Crash
WHITTIER, CA (December 4, 2021) – Authorities detained Darrell Jewett after a fatal DUI hit-and-run crash in Whittier.
Police determined that the 34-year-old man was under the influence when he killed Garrett Michael Hayward in the wreck on November 25.
The incident began when Darrell Jewett was driving a Nissan Altima in the area of Colima and Lambert roads in South Whittier. At the same time, the 18-year-old victim was in a Honda Accord.

Police said the suspect then struck the other vehicle as it entered the intersection. The Whittier Daily News and ABC 7 News wrote that the accident took place at around 5:30 a.m.
The Honda Accord caught fire as a result of the collision. Garrett Hayward ended up pinned inside the burning car, where he died.
Meanwhile, the drunk driver did not stop to help and fled on foot. Police soon arrested Darrell Jewett on suspicion of DUI, vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run causing serious injury or death.
The Whittier DUI hit-and-run crash is still under investigation.
