David Downs, 62, ID’d as Suspect in San Luis Obispo Fatal DUI Crash on Tank Farm

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA (August 5, 2022) – Authorities David Downs after a DUI crash that killed a man in San Luis Obispo.

The California Highway Patrol determined that the 62-year-old man was under the influence of drugs when the fatal wreck occurred on Saturday.

The incident happened when David Downs was driving a 2012 Chevrolet east on Tank Farm Road in San Luis Obispo. At the same time, a 2003 Volkswagen was going west.

CHP said he crossed over the opposite lane and then slammed into the Volkswagen. The Tribune and KSBY News wrote that the two cars crashed west of Santa Fe Road.

Stephen Kritz, 63, Killed in Wreck

The collision took place on July 30 at about 8:14 a.m. The driver of the Volkswagen, 63-year-old man San Luis Obispo resident Stephen James Kritz, died at the scene of the accident.

David Downs ended up suffering from major injuries as a result of the crash. Paramedics rushed him to the Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo for treatment.

Meanwhile, CHP soon arrested David Downs on suspicion of charges of murder, gross vehicular manslaughter and DUI causing injury or death.
