SAN BERNARDINO, California (July 20, 2015) — David John Ramos, 48, of Crestline was killed Saturday night in a hit-and-run pedestrian accident in the 3000 block of North Waterman Avenue, a report by the San Bernardino County Sheriff Coroner said.
The man was walking in the southbound lanes of Waterman Avenue when he was struck about 9:40 p.m. by a driver in an SUV or minivan who fled the scene of the crash. Paramedics responded, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The fatal crash is under investigation by The San Bernardino Police Department. Police closed down the roadway between 30th Street and Marshall Avenue to conduct an investigation.
According to the CHP’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Report there were 217 people killed in traffic accidents in San Bernardino County in 2012, including 91 deaths involving alcohol, 51 pedestrian deaths, 7 people killed on bicycles and 30 killed in motorcycle accidents. There were also 7,942 people killed in the county among all types of crashes.
“This is a tragedy for this man’s family as they cope with news of this fatal crash,” said Attorney James Johnson. “My heart goes out to them as they try to piece together who did this and come to terms with his loss.”
Hit-and-run crashes involving pedestrians are commonplace in Southern California, particularly when there is a driver who is intoxicated or unlicensed or uninsured. When a driver flees the scene of a collision they become a criminal under California law. The victim or their family, however, has legal rights that must be preserved.
