Family in Minivan Hit by Wrong-way Driver Kellie Coleman
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (August 9, 2018) — David Shimamoto was driving with his family on the Interstate 80 Freeway Tuesday when their minivan collided with a wrong-way driver in an SUV, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Shimamoto was traveling that day with his 8-year-old and 6-year-old daughters when the collision took place. He and the older daughter suffered moderate injuries, but his younger daughter was critically injured in the crash. The family was taken to UC Davis Medical Center.
The three family members were rushed to hospitals, along with the other driver 22-year-old Kellie Coleman, of Fair Oaks. Coleman had reportedly entered the freeway in the wrong direction from an off-ramp.
Paramedics responded and rushed all three family members and Coleman to hospitals. Police suspect that Coleman was driving under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash. He was arrested at the hospital and remains in custody there while being treated for major injuries.
