Dayveonna Polk, 3, Killed in Merced Hit-and-Run at R and 18th Streets
MERCED (December 5, 2017) – A child who died after an alleged hit-and-run accident at R and 18th streets Monday afternoon has been identified as Dayveonna Polk, according to Bakersfield Now.
Police said the 3-year-old girl was airlifted to an area trauma center where she later succumbed to her injuries.
As per the article, officials reported that Dayveonna Polk was walking with her mother and three other children when she was struck by a vehicle. They were in a crosswalk when the collision took place at around 3:40 p.m.
A surveillance video showed that the car stopped for the red light and turned left on R Street when the light changed to green. The driver then hit the young girl.
The motorist did not stop to render assistance and fled, leaving the 3-year-old unresponsive in the roadway. The vehicle, a late 90s purple Honda Accord with a raised tail fin and tinted back windows, was last seen heading through a parking lot following the incident.
The suspect, 22-year-old Livingston resident Isaac Maldonado, was arrested and is charged with gross vehicular manslaughter.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Officer McKeeman at (209) 388-7752, or the Merced Police Department Tipster Line at (209) 385-4725.
We offer our prayers and most heartfelt condolences to the family members of the innocent child and their friends during such a difficult time.
Wrongful Death Lawyer
In this case, it is evident that the motorist involved will be held fully responsible for causing the incident that led to the death of the young girl. Regardless of their reasons, leaving the area following a crash is a serious crime and is punishable by law, especially if the incident tragically killed another individual. We hope the suspect will be located and justice will then be served.
The family of the child has then the right to pursue a wrongful death lawsuit against the at-fault party who has evidently neglected the safety of others on the road. The claim will include a recompense for the funeral costs, loss of future income and loss of love and companionship. No monetary amount can replace the loss of a loved one, however, it is important that the surviving family is aware of their legal rights.
