Deadly Bus Accident on Pomona (60) Freeway in City of Industry

One Killed, Two Injured in Fiery Bus Incident on State Route 60

CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif., (August 21, 2026) — A tragic incident early Friday morning resulted in a fatality on the eastbound Pomona (60) Freeway near Azusa Avenue, involving a tour bus catching fire in the City of Industry.

The incident was reported on August 21st at approximately 5:37 a.m., just west of Azusa Avenue. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the initial report was of a bus on fire on the right shoulder of the freeway.

The driver of the Mercedes-Benz bus pulled over after detecting smoke coming from the back of the bus. The driver and passengers exited the vehicle, but one person was missing and later found deceased in the back of the bus.

Flames were observed emanating from the rear of the vehicle due to a possible mechanical issue, prompting an immediate response from Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACOFD) units. The back half of the bus was totally burned out.

“A fire at the back end of the bus is not uncommon,” said Attorney James Johnson, an experienced bus accident attorney. “The engine, transmission, and major hot exhaust components are located there. Fluid leaks, mechanical failures, or electrical shorts in this confined space tend to easily ignite under high heat.”

Reportedly, two parties with minor injuries were able to exit the vehicle before emergency services arrived. Both people were transported to a hospital for further treatment. One of those injured was treated at the hospital for smoke inhalation. However, the situation escalated, and the CHP reclassified the incident as a fatality shortly before 5:50 a.m., indicating the severity of the situation.

The freeway’s lanes 2, 3, and 4 were reportedly blocked off as emergency services responded to the scene. Authorities requested a hard closure from Caltrans to manage the incident, with a SigAlert issued for the area.

As of now, the identity of the deceased individual has not been released. Emergency responders are continuing their investigation into the cause of the fire and subsequent fatality. CHP is actively seeking any witnesses who may have seen the incident unfold.

Investigators are working diligently to gather all pertinent details regarding the incident, and they urge anyone with information to come forward.
