Deadly Head-on Crash State Route 78 Near Julian
Two Killed; Two Critically Injured in Collision on SR-78
SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. (April 7, 2026) — Two people died in Julian on Saturday following a violent head-on crash on state Route 78 between two pickup trucks on Banner Grade, officials said.

The crash, which happened around 2:50 p.m. on April 4th happened when one of the trucks veered into the path of the other pickup truck.
CAL Fire sent firefighters to the scene to extricate those trapped and help those injured. A man and woman with serious injuries were airlifted to a hospital, and a driver and passenger were confirmed dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, a SigAlert was issued by the California Highway Patrol, and SR-78 was closed for several hours in both directions between Banner Road and San Felipe Road.
It wasn’t until just before 9:30 p.m. that Caltrans reopened the roadway.
