Denion Tillis Jr., Killed in Hemet Crash at Sanderson Avenue and Florida Street

Denion Tillis Jr., Killed in Hemet Crash at Sanderson Avenue and Florida Street

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, Calif. (Feb. 17, 2025) — Denion Tillis Jr., 34, of Hemet, died early Tuesday following injuries sustained in a traffic incident at Sanderson Avenue and Florida Street, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office–Coroner.

The victim was involved in a collision with another motorist around 3:07 a.m. on Feb. 17 at the Hemet intersection, the report said.

The drivers of a white Volkswagen sedan and a silver Honda were involved in the collision, according to a press release by the Hemet Police Department.

Detectives working on the case believe the Volkswagen’s driver was westbound on Florida Avenue and attempted to make a U-turn at Sanderson Avenue. That’s when the car was struck by the oncoming silver Honda.

However, the driver of the Honda fled after the accident before police arrived on scene. Sadly, the driver of the Volkswagen identified as Denion Tillis Jr., was found unresponsive.

Paramedics transported him to Riverside University Health System where he was pronounced dead at 4:05 a.m., the coroner reported. Next of kin have been notified.

The suspect who fled the scene was located by police a short distance from the scene and taken into custody.

The incident remains under investigation by the Hemet Police Department. It’s unknown at this time if alcohol and or drugs were factors.

Witnesses or anyone with information about the collision should speak with traffic investigators and to contact Officer Reineke at (951)765-2400 and reference file #2026-01240.
