Responsible Drivers Ensure Safe Trick-or-Treating
CALIFORNIA — Whether you are driving to a party, an amusement park, or a neighborhood haunted house, don’t ruin Halloween night by drunk driving.
The holiday, celebrated on October 31st, has become known for having a high number of drunk driving accidents and pedestrian fatalities.
Indeed, there were 159 traffic fatalities on Halloween night between 2017 and 2021 due to drunk driving, but more recently, roughly 40 percent of the 72 fatalities nationwide in 2022 involved a DUI driver.
The scariest part of Halloween is that children die in pedestrian collisions on October 31st more than any other day of the year.
These collisions can often take place in the middle of the block where drivers don’t anticipate someone would step out and cross the road.
While children are often the concern, most drunk driving fatalities (55 percent) that happen on Oct. 31st, involve young adults ages 21 to 34 years old.
Furthermore, the rate of alcohol impairment among drivers involved in a nighttime crash fatality was 2.8 times higher than during the day.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, holidays such as Halloween are peak periods for drinking and driving.
There are steps drivers should take when traveling on Halloween:
- Be alert, slow down for pedestrians: Slow down for pedestrians in residential neighborhoods
- Don’t drink and drive: Drunk drivers are not only dangerous, but it can ruin your life
- Be aware of distractions: Put down your cell phone, turn down music, keep your hands on the steering wheel.
- Make a plan: Plan a sober drive home, stay overnight, use public transportation or ride-share and taxi services if you are going out drinking at a party of bar
