Dorothy Cousins, 79; and James Hendrickson, 75, Killed in Castroville Crash
MONTEREY COUNTY, CA (May 25, 2023) – Dorothy Cousins and James Hendrickson were killed after a crash on Highway 1 outside of Castroville.
The coroner’s office identified the 79-year-old Soquel woman and the 75-year-old Tennessee man as victims in the fatal wreck on Tuesday.
The incident happened when Dorothy Cousins was driving a Mazda CX-5 with James Hendrickson and another person as her passengers near Castroville. The three were going south on Highway 1.
At the same time, a GMC Sierra was traveling north. For an unknown reason, the pickup truck drifted into oncoming traffic directly into the path of the Mazda.
2 Seriously Injured in Wreck
In the process, the GMC slammed head-on into the other car. The California Highway Patrol said the two collided just south of Molera Road.
The Santa Cruz Sentinel and KSBW News wrote that the accident took place on May 23 shortly before 1 p.m. Both Dorothy Cousins and James Hendrickson died at the scene of the crash.
The other occupant of the Mazda, a 73-year-old Tennessee woman, and the motorist in the Sierra sustained major injuries as a result of the collision.
Paramedics rushed the patients to the Natividad Medical Center for treatment. CHP named the driver of the pickup as 69-year-old David Hart, of Santa Cruz.
Meanwhile, officers forced southbound Highway 1 to shut down for several hours following the wreck. The cause of the Castroville crash is still under investigation.
