Major Injury Crash on I-5 Freeway at Lakewood Boulevard
DOWNEY, Calif. (Oct. 9, 2020) — Two separate multi-vehicle crashes involving a pickup truck and a big rig led to the temporary closure Friday of the southbound side of the 5 Freeway through Downey.
One of the collisions involved four motorists and resulted in major injuries and the other was a two-vehicle crash with property damage only.
The initial crash took place at 5:24 a.m. at Lakewood Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol’s traffic incident log. A motorist who was in the pickup truck suffered major injuries and was trapped in the vehicle. The pickup suffered major front-end damage and collided with the guardrail. The Downey Fire Department responded to transport the injured motorist to the hospital.
It’s unknown at this time what prompted the collision, but one of the vehicle’s lost nails and screws in the roadway causing a potential hazard for roughly 100 feet.
The crash prompted a SigAlert for all southbound lanes.
