Bicyclist Hit by Pickup Truck on Cohasset Road
COHASSET, Calif. (Aug. 2, 2018) — A 75-year-old bicyclist identified as Dr. William Patrick Doherty died after he was struck by a pickup truck Saturday morning on Cohasset Road, just north of Chico, the California Highway Patrol said
Doherty was reportedly traveling northbound on Cohasset Road, north of Sigler Lane. About 10:20 a.m. he reportedly swerved to avoid a dangerous road condition and steered farther into the traffic lane, CHP officer Joe Ortiz said.
Meanwhile, Jim Voyles, 87, of Chico, was headed northbound on Cohasset Road in his Ford F-150 pickup truck.
As the truck approached the bicyclist from behind, the driver passed him at speeds estimated at 40-45 mph, police said. The bicyclist reportedly veered into the path of the pickup and was hit by the right-side mirror. The impact caused the bicyclist to be thrown off the bike and into the roadway.
Paramedics were called to the scene and transported Doherty to Enloe Medical Center in Chico. He was treated for major injuries and died the next day.
The crash remains under investigation to determine fault.
Traffic Accident Investigation
At this time, it’s unknown who is responsible for this horrible crash. Police are reviewing evidence to determine fault and whether or not any citations should be made. Typically, under California vehicle code, motorists are required to provide a 3-foot space when they pass bicyclists. Also, if a dangerous road condition causes an injury or fatality, there could be grounds for a lawsuit against the entity that oversees the roadway.
We extend our heartfelt prayers to the family of the victim as they cope with this tragedy.
If a negligent driver or another entity is at fault for a collision resulting in injuries to you or a loved one, there may be grounds for a personal injury or wrongful death claim.
