Drew Gerken Killed, 5 Injured After Boat Crash on Lake Oroville
OROVILLE (May 14, 2018) – One person was killed, and several others were injured in a boating accident Sunday evening on Lake Oroville in the area of West Branch Bridge.
The fatality was identified as 27-year-old Drew Gerken, of the Paradise or Chico.
According to Action News Now, a boat struck the shore in Dark Canyon area on the north side of the channel at approximately 6:30 p.m. The boat was running 30 miles per hour when it crashed into the bank.
Authorities said six people were ejected upon impact. One victim, later identified as Gerken, suffered deadly injuries as a result of the incident.
Five other unidentified people were reportedly harmed in the crash. The conditions at this time of the victims remained unknown.
Brandon Smith, 29, Arrested on BUI After Lake Oroville Boat Crash
Meanwhile, primary reports indicated the boat operator, 29-year-old Brandon Smith, was arrested following the crash. The man was taken into custody on Boating Under the Influence, and was charged with involuntary manslaughter.
Further investigation on the case is ongoing.
