Driver Suspected of DUI in Fatal Bakersfield Crash at California Avenue, Chester Lane

Bakersfield Man Allegedly Ran Red Light, Killed Gregory Lee Fraley

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (June 29, 2026)Gavin Mundschau, 23, of Bakersfield, is expected to face a felony vehicular manslaughter charge after investigators say he was driving under the influence when he allegedly ran a red light and caused a fatal collision early Sunday morning.

The driver, who is being held in jail in lieu of $460,910 bail, is also facing infractions for failure to provide proof of insurance and texting while driving. His court appearance is scheduled for 3 p.m. on June 30th.

According to the Bakersfield Police Department, the crash occurred at approximately 12:06 a.m. on June 28 at the intersection of California Avenue and Chester Lane.

Investigators said Mundschau was behind the wheel of a westbound silver Mazda hatchback traveling on California Avenue when he entered the intersection against a red traffic signal. His vehicle collided with a silver BMW sedan that was proceeding southbound on Chester Lane with the right of way.

Emergency responders found only the drivers inside the two vehicles. The BMW driver, Gregory Lee Fraley, 63, of Bakersfield, suffered life-threatening injuries. The Bakersfield man was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.

Police determined that Mundschau was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. He sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment before being placed under arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Following his release from medical care, Mundschau is expected to be booked into the Kern County Sheriff’s Office jail on charges that include vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, according to police.

The Bakersfield Police Department’s Major Collision Investigation Team continues to investigate the fatal crash. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the department at (661) 327-7111.
