Drunk Driving Victims Spike From Thanksgiving Eve through New Year’s Eve

Thirty-Percent of all Traffic Deaths Involve a Drunk, Drugged Driver

Drunk Driving Victims Spike From Thanksgiving Eve through New Year's EveLOS ANGELES, Calif. (Nov. 18, 2022) – Drivers traveling down the Hollywood 101 Freeway tonight might notice Los Angeles City Hall draped in red light —  but not it’s not an early Christmas celebration.

Instead, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) organized this to both honor the memory of thousands of victims of drunken and drugged driving and remind others to designate a driver.

Also, a candlelight vigil is scheduled to run from 4:45 p.m. to 6 p.m. at City Hall as part of the kick off of MADD’s 36th annual “Tie One On for Safety” campaign.

Patricia Rillera, executive director of MADD in California, says the campaign aims to highlight the most dangerous time of the year for motorists: the holiday season. This is the period staring with Thanksgiving and ending on New Year’s Day. It accounts for roughly 1,133 drunk driving deaths nationwide as well as about 30 percent of all traffic deaths, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

MADD representatives urge motorists to set a reminder for themselves in their vehicle. Specifically, they ask motorists to tie a red ribbon in their vehicle that is visible to the driver. Their hope is that motorists will designate a sober driver or hire a taxi or rideshare. The red ribbon idea evolves from the drinking phrase to “tie one on” or drink alcohol and party.

Johnson Attorneys Group would also like to remind our friends to never drink and drive.

“People spend significant money drinking at the bar, but then they say they can’t afford an Uber ride home,” Attorney James Johnson said. “This is nonsense. We must prioritize safety and be responsible, in order to save lives.”

Also, please encourage friends and family members to do the same.
