EAST COUNTY, Calif. (June 15, 2023) — An East County car accident on State Route 94 left one person dead and another injured on Wednesday night near Cochera Via in the Barrett Junction area.
The fiery two-vehicle crash happened around 7:15 p.m. on June 14th in a rural East County area, Cal Fire officials told the San Diego Union-Tribune.
The drivers of a pickup truck hauling an SUV on a flatbed trailer and a sedan were involved in the collision, fire officials said. One of the vehicles involved also caught on fire, spreading to the other vehicle and setting off a bush fire along the roadside.
Border Patrol police responded to the scene to help those involved. Sadly, one of the people suffered major injuries and died at the scene. A second person was transported to a hospital with minor injuries.
Meanwhile, fire officials worked to extinguish the fire that wound up burning a patch of brush around 20-foot by 20-foot.
Police closed down a portion of the roadway to conduct an investigation into the cause of the accident on State Route 94 and liability.
