OCEANSIDE, Calif. (August 10, 2023) — Edwin Vincent Hoffman, 29, of Oceanside, was arrested on hit-and-run and DUI charges Thursday following last night’s crash on the Interstate 5 Freeway.
The deadly collision occurred at around 9 p.m. on Wednesday, August 9th, just north of state Route 78, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP officials say the Oceanside man was driving a black Chevrolet Corvette northbound on the I-5 Freeway when the vehicle veered off the road onto the right shoulder. The Corvette crashed into a pared red Dodge Caliber. After hitting the Dodge, the Corvette moved back into traffic lanes and collided with a semi-truck, police said.
After his vehicle came to a stop, Edwin Hoffman exited and fled on foot from the crash scene.
Meanwhile, a woman who was a passenger in the Dodge suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. The other four occupants from the Dodge suffered moderate to major injuries and were hospitalized.
Police searched the area for the suspect and eventually located him near the scene of the collision.
They arrested him and booked him into the Vista Detention Facility where he is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail. He faces four felony charges for allegedly causing the fatal crash.
