The man was walking in traffic lanes on the eastbound 8 Freeway near Greenfield Drive just before midnight. The couple who were in the car told authorities they pulled over at a Mobile gas station because they felt it was too dangerous to stop on the freeway.
Paramedics rushed the injured man to Sharp Memorial Hospital in grave condition. He later died a few hours later of his injuries at the hospital.
Police are investigating what circumstances led to the crash and whether or not drugs or alcohol were involved. There were no arrests or citations made as the driver was not suspected of any crimes.
A SigAlert was issued and the roadway was eventually cleared of debris after the crash.
