Tesla SUV Hits Man Crossing Irvine Boulevard

IRVINE, Calif. (May 20, 2026) — An 87-year-old man riding a mobility scooter died Thursday night when he was hit by a driver in a Tesla SUV while attempting to cross Irvine Boulevard at Groveland in Irvine.

The traffic accident happened around 8:30 p.m. on May 14th between the Stonegate and Woodbury residential communities, according to a press release by the Irvine Police Department.

Police and Orange County Fire Authority responded to help those injured, but sadly the elderly man died at the scene. His identity has not yet been released.

Meanwhile, the Tesla driver was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries and is cooperating with the police investigation.

Detectives working on the case determined the westbound Tesla was traveling on Irvine Boulevard with a green light. However, the man on the mobility scooter reportedly entered the northbound crosswalk at Groveland. The SUV hit the man in the roadway, but at this time, it’s unclear if other factors were involved, such as distracted driving, drugs, or alcohol.

The Irvine Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team is handling the investigation.
