Elio Mendez-Martinez, 25, Injured in Ceres Crash on Service Road
CERES, CA (December 8, 2021) – A DUI head-on crash left Elio Mendez-Martinez injured on Service Road in Ceres.
The California Highway Patrol identified the 25-year-old Maxwell man as one of the victims in the collision which happened on Tuesday.
The incident began when Elio Mendez-Martinez was driving a 2021 Dodge pickup truck with a trailer west on Service Road in Ceres. He was traveling in front of a large Freightliner truck.
A 1998 Ford SUV, going east, partially entered the westbound lane into the path of the semi-truck. In the process, the Ford sideswiped the Freightliner and continued onto the overpass.
CHP said the SUV then struck the Dodge head-on. The Modesto Bee wrote that the vehicles crashed near Highway 99 and Moffett Road.
Multiple Vehicles Collide
The SUV rolled over, landed on its roof and came to complete stop on the overpass guardrail. The wreck took place on December 7 at about 6:15 p.m.
Firefighters along with the paramedics arrived at the scene and extricated three trapped occupants from the pickup. Elio Mendez-Martinez survived with minor injuries as a result of the crash.
His three passengers sustained minor to major injuries in the collision. Medical personnel took Elio Mendez-Martinez to the Memorial Medical Center and his passengers to hospitals for treatment.
Meanwhile, CHP determined that the driver of the Ford was under the influence when the accident occurred. They soon arrested him for felony DUI.
Officers added that the suspect was involved in a non-injury hit-and-run collision prior to the pile-up. The Ceres crash is still under investigation.
