STANISLAUS COUNTY, CA (April 21, 2021) – A big rig crash killed Elpidio Ramirez Tovar along the Interstate 5 near Westley.
The California Highway Patrol identified the 41-year-old Five Points man as the victim of the wreck prompted by a DUI driver.
The incident began on Wednesday when a red sedan was veering across both lanes of the Interstate 5, south of Howard Road, in Westley.
A semi-truck driver saw the car and boxed in the swerving motorist with his trailer. CHP said in the process, two more big rigs traveling behind also came to a complete stop.

However, Elpidio Ramirez Tovar failed to stop his semi-truck and slammed into the rear of the tractor-trailer in front of him. The impact forced the rear-ended big rig into the semi-truck ahead.
Elpidio Ramirez Tovar ended up ejected from the cab and landed on the east shoulder of the Interstate 5. The Modesto Bee reported the accident at around 1 a.m.
Firefighters along with the paramedics responded and pronounced Tovar dead at the scene. The operator of the big rig he struck sustained minor injuries as a result of the collision.
Meanwhile, CHP determined that the male driver of the sedan was under the influence of drugs. Authorities soon arrested him on suspicion of DUI.
The fatal crash and the DUI arrest are still under investigation.
