The crash was reported early Thursday morning when the SUV they were riding in went off the I-80 Freeway and slammed into a parked big-rig truck.
The victims were all siblings traveling to San Francisco to visit their sick father who was in the hospital.
The crash took place during a downpour about 1 a.m. on the westbound side of the Interstate 80 at Powell Street. The California Highway Patrol stated that the SUV became wedged underneath the big-rig.
Meanwhile, police have cited the driver of the big rig truck that was parked on the side of I-80. The driver was sleeping in the vehicle that was parked illegally on the shoulder. Rogue Transportation LLC out of Oregon owns the truck.
Police say they do not know what led to the SUV veering off the roadway. They are investigating whether or not alcohol, drugs or speed were factors.
The fourth person in the SUV survived with major injuries and was taken by ambulance to Highland Hospital in Oakland.
There were lane closures for two hours due to the investigation.
