Emily Guillen-Casillas, 5, Killed and Maria Guillen, 53, Critically Injured in Bakersfield Accident
BAKERSFIELD (December 7, 2017) – A child was killed while her grandmother was critically injured after being struck by a vehicle near California Spring Drive and Harris Road Wednesday, according to Bakersfield Now.
Kern County Coroner’s Office and the family of the victims identified the girl as 5-year-old Emily Guillen-Casillas, and the survivor as 53-year-old Maria Guillen.
As per the article, Guillen-Casillas was walking home with her grandmother from a bus stop when they were hit by a car. The two were on a sidewalk when the collision occurred at about 1:30 p.m.
The girl was rushed to Kern Medical, where she was later pronounced dead. Maria Guillen was also hospitalized where she was listed in critical condition.
Guillen reportedly lost a leg and has to undergo more surgery.
Meanwhile, Kern Golden Empire wrote that the driver was going north on California Springs Drive when she allegedly made an eastward turn but then swerved to avoid oncoming vehicles. Bakersfield Now indicated that the motorist, a woman in her 40s, apparently lost control of her vehicle and struck the pedestrians.
She was unharmed but was transported for a previous medical condition. The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is urged to contact police at (661) 327-7111.
We offer our sincerest thoughts and prayers to the family members and friends of the child and the gravely wounded woman during such a difficult time.
Wrongful Death and Personal Injury Lawyer
It is necessary that certain precautionary measures shall be put into action by the motorists, taking into consideration the other people such as the pedestrians who are also in the roadway. Authorities are still investigating how fast the driver was going, whether or not alcohol or drugs were involved, and whether or not there were any mechanical issues with the car involved. The investigation also includes analyzing measurements of evidence such as point of impact, final resting positions of the vehicle, skid and gouge marks.
Once the investigation is over and it proves that a negligent party has caused the incident and led to the death of the innocent girl and severe injuries of her grandmother, the family members of both victims may have the right to pursue a wrongful death and personal injury lawsuit against the at-fault individual. The claim will include a recompense for the funeral costs, hospital bills, loss of future income, loss of love and companionship and pain and suffering.
