Modesto Man Killed in Crash with Alleged DUI Driver
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Sept. 20, 2021) — Erik Davalos, 33, of Modesto, died in a three-vehicle crash Sunday near McHenry Avenue and Standiford Avenue in Modesto.
According to the Modesto Police Department, the deadly crash happened about 6 p.m. at the intersection. The crash took place about 5:30 p.m. between Sylvan and Woodrow avenues.
Miguel Angel Zapien, 20, of Escalon, was driving a black 2004 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck north on McHenry Avenue. He collided into the driver’s side of a 2022 black Hyundai IONIQ driven by Erik Davalos. The Hyundai was exiting a parking lot on the east side of the roadway.
Upon impact, the Hyundai driven by Erik Davalos crossed into southbound lanes on McHenry Avenue where it also collided with a 2009 black Ford F-150 pickup truck. During the crash, Erik Davalos suffered major injuries and became trapped in his vehicle. Modesto firefighters extricated him, but he died on scene, Modesto police said in a report.
Meanwhile, both Miguel Zapien and the driver of the Ford F-150 pickup truck suffered minor injuries.
Investigators with the Modesto Police Department suspected Miguel Zapien was DUI. He was treated for his injuries before being arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter charges. Police booked him into the Stanislaus County Jail.
Our thoughts and prayers extend to the family of Erick Davalos as they cope with this tragedy.
