Erik Steverson, 32, ID’d as DUI Hit-and-Run Driver in Oakland Fatal Wrong-Way Crash
OAKLAND, CA (September 6, 2021) – Authorities detained Erik Steverson after a fatal wrong-way hit-and-run crash on the Interstate 80 in Oakland.
The California Highway Patrol determined that the 32-year-old man was under the influence when the wreck took place on Monday.
The incident began when Erik Steverson was driving a Chevrolet Impala the wrong-way on the eastbound Interstate 80 in Oakland. After some time, he struck a Volkswagen Jetta.
CHP said the two cars crashed near the eastbound Interstate 580 connector. The Volkswagen burst into flames and came to a rest partially over a guard rail
Woman Killed in Car Collision
KRON 4 News and KTVU News wrote that the accident occurred at about 1:12 a.m. Officers confirmed that the woman driving the Jetta died at the scene.
The name pf the deceased victim has not been yet released pending notification of next of kin. Meanwhile, Erik Steverson abandoned the Impala following the crash and fled on foot.
CHP found him on the bike path below the Interstate 80. They took the suspect to a hospital for treatment of minor wounds.
Authorities soon arrested Erik Steverson on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run and DUI. The Oakland wrong-way hit-and-run crash is still under investigation.
