SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. (Nov. 30, 2018) – A pickup truck carrying 11 people crashed Thursday night killing three people after its driver led Border Patrol agents on a chase on the Interstate 8 Freeway in Boulevard.

Update:  Erika Jiusten Gonzalez-Cardoso, 38, ID’d as one of three killed in crash

Update on 12/18: Jorge Luis Garcia-Isordia, 22, has been identified as one of two men killed.

The collision took place about 4:30 p.m. in the westbound lanes of the freeway near Crestwood Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The Border Patrol was attempting to pull over the driver of a Chevrolet Silverado truck, but the man refused and led them on a high-speed chase initiated near the border.

The truck eventually crashed after it drove over a spike strip deployed by agents. The spike strip was placed on I-8 just east of Crestwood Road. The driver lost control of the vehicle after driving over the spike strip and it went up an embankment, became airborne and rolled down the embankment where it came to rest on the freeway in the westbound No. 2 lane.

Ten of the occupants who were traveling in the truck were ejected including Jorge Luis Garcia-Isordia, 22, and Erika Gonzalez-Cardoso, 38, who died of their injuries at the scene. A second man who died has not yet been identified publicly. Only the driver was wearing a seat belt. The driver and eight others were transported to hospitals with undisclosed injuries.

The truck driver was arrested by Border Patrol agents.

Accident Investigation

Police are heading up an investigation into the cause of this crash and assign liability to those who are responsible for the injuries and deaths. At this time, it appears that the driver of the truck is at fault, but the Border Patrol officers may also share responsibility.

Those of us at Johnson Attorneys Group offer our condolences to the families of Erika Gonzalez-Cardoso, Jorge Luis Garcia-Isordia and the unidentified man who died.
