Newport Beach Man, 80, Riding Bicycle Killed in Crash
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (March 30, 2021) — Ernest Adams, 80, of Newport Beach was killed Sunday afternoon while riding a bicycle after he was hit by a suspected drunk driver at 16th Street and Irvine Avenue.
The fatal bicycle accident happened about 3:16 p.m. on March 28th near Newport Harbor High School.
The elderly man was riding his bicycle on 16th Street near Irvine Avenue, according to a report by the Orange County Sheriff’s Coroner’s Office.
Driver Arrested on DUI Charges Allegedly Ran a Stop Sign
The Newport Beach Police Department stated suspect allegedly ran through a stop sign prior to hitting the victim riding a bicycle.
Paramedics transported Ernest Adams to a local hospital where he later died of his injuries. The coroner later identified Ernest Adams as the man who died in the crash.
There were multiple eyewitnesses who saw the suspect drive through a stop sign before the crash.
Meanwhile, the driver stopped and police conducted a field sobriety test on the suspect.
Alexis Garcialopez, 20, of Norwalk, was arrested on suspicion of DUI causing serious bodily injury.
