Driver Crashes SUV, Flees Scene of Accident Killing 4 Young Men
UPDATE: Coroner Releases Names of 3 Men Killed in Crash: Oscar Danilo Escobar Zuniga, 18, Guillermo Alexander Garcia Gomez, 27, and Emiro Natael Coyoy-Cardona, 25, all of Guatemala.
ESSEX, California (March 31, 2014) – Four men were killed and three other people were critically injured Sunday afternoon in a solo car accident on the Interstate 40 Highway at Mile Marker 2014, just west of the Fenner Rest Stop in rural Essex, according to a press release by the San Bernardino County Sheriff Coroner.
About 4:45 p.m., CHP officers responded with paramedics to the single-vehicle rollover crash, but before they arrived the driver of the 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe fled the scene on foot after seven of his eight passengers were ejected in the collision. The four men who died in the crash have not been identified, but they ranged in age from 18 to 25 years old, the report said.
Paramedics air-lifted three people to nearby hospitals in Las Vegas. Meanwhile, CHP officers are searching for the driver and the accident is under investigation.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those killed in this crash as well as those recovering from injuries,” said Attorney James Johnson. “Police will hopefully track down this driver so the families may obtain some closure.”
