Two Women Struck in Hit-and-run Crash; 1 Killed, 1 Injured
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (May 3, 2024) – A driver struck Estela Melani Gomez, 74, and her cousin, Maria Ortiz, 83, in a hit-and-run crash Thursday at West Adams Boulevard and Magnolia Avenue in South Los Angeles.
The deadly pedestrian accident happened at around 1:20 p.m. on Thursday, May 2nd, University Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, according to KTLA 5 News.
The women were riding together on a Metro bus exited at the intersection of Adams Boulevard and Magnolia Avenue. As they were walking home, a driver in a white van backed out of a private driveway and hit them.
The driver struck both women and then fled the scene. Estella Gomez suffered major injuries and died at the scene, but her 83-year-old cousin, Maria Ortiz, was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
The suspect fled the scene in an eastbound direction on West 25th Street, the Los Angeles Police Department reports. However, police later arrested a suspect and the person is being held, but it’s unknown what charges they face.
