EUREKA (March 10, 2017)- According to the Times-Standard, Shirley Hoyt, 56, of Eureka, has been identified as the woman who was fatally struck Thursday morning following a hit-and-run.
Police officials responded to the scene which occurred at 11:14 a.m. at the intersection of S Street and 4th Street.
Per the article, Hoyt has been crossing the road within the means of a marked crosswalk before being struck by a man driving a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck traveling over the speed limit. He failed to stop and proceeded to leave the scene.
Meanwhile, Hoyt was severely injured and rushed to St. Joseph Hospital, where she sadly died of her injuries.
Authorities were able to track down the driver of the pickup identified as Larry Nielsen. He was arrested for vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run. Police were able to determine he was not under the influence and there is ongoing speculation that Nielsen was having a health condition like contributing to the collision.
