ENCINITAS, Calif. (March 23, 2022) — Ezekiel Beas, 19, of Vista, died in a crash involving a suspected DUI driver on the Interstate 5 Freeway early Wednesday at La Costa Avenue.

The deadly, two-vehicle crash happened in the northbound lanes about 2:40 a.m. on March 23rd, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Isidrone Martinez was driving the Honda Civic with Ezekiel Beas and three other passengers as they traveled northbound on the I-5 Freeway. The vehicle approached a Caltrans construction zone and a hard closure. Two right lanes were closed, however, the Oceanside man reportedly drove into the construction zone.

The driver allegedly veered left toward the No. 2 lane. That’s when he crashed into the right rear of a gray Toyota Prius operated by a driver working for Uber. Upon impact, the Honda veered towards the right side and went up an embankment. The Honda overturned multiple times.

Vista Teen Killed, 6 Injured in Encinitas Crash

Ezekiel Beas was apparently not wearing a seat belt and was one of two ejected from the vehicle. He landed in the No. 3 lane and was hit by an oncoming vehicle. Sadly, the Vista teen died at the scene.

Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to rescue some of the the people trapped in the overturned vehicle.

Meanwhile, Martinez suffered major injuries and paramedics took him to a hospital.  Additionally, his three other passengers suffered major injuries in the Encinitas crash. Paramedics transported a 20-year-old Oceanside man, a 20-year-old Oceanside woman and a 22-year-old Valley Center woman to the hospital. Furthermore, the 33-year-old San Diego man driving the Uber and his 33-year-old male passenger were treated for minor injuries.

CHP officers requested the closure of all northbound lanes on the Interstate 5 Freeway due to the crash and subsequent investigation.  Authorities redirected traffic off the Freeway at the La Costa Avenue ramp.

Police arrested the driver of the first vehicle on suspicion of drunken driving., but he could face other charges as well.
