3 Killed, 18 Injured in Fallbrook Bus Accident on Interstate 15 Freeway
FALLBROOK, Calif. (Feb. 22, 2020) — Three people are dead and 18 were hospitalized Saturday morning after a charter bus veered off the side of the 15 Freeway in North San Diego County near Pala Mesa.
The bus reportedly overturned onto its roof about 10:30 a.m., just south of Highway 76, officials said.
The North County Fire Protection District reported that firefighters extricated multiple trapped and injured people from the overturned bus. The bus wound up on its roof down on the southbound side of the 15 Freeway on a grassy embankment.
Three people died at the scene of the collision, but their gender and ages were not yet disclosed. One of them remained trapped in the bus and had to be extricated by firefighters.
Ambulances transported five people to Inland Valley Hospital, five to Palomar Medical Center, and eight to Temecula for various injuries. The driver survived the crash with undisclosed injuries.
Police stated that traffic was backed up for miles after the collision.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Major Accident Investigation Team.
