Fatal Pomona 60 Freeway Crash Near Crossroads Parkway

Child Killed Wrong-way Driver Crash on Pomona 60 Freeway

CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. (March 22, 2023) — A fatal hit-and-run crash happened on the Pomona 60 Freeway early Wednesday near Crossroads Parkway in the City of Industry.

An 11-year-old girl died at the scene and Rafael Zarate, 50, was hospitalized after the crash with a wrong-way driver, ABC 7 News reports. The collision occurred when a wrong-way driver traveled eastbound in the westbound lanes of State Route 60, ABC News reported.

The traffic accident involving three cars and two trucks occurred around 4 a.m. on March 22nd, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Authorities say a driver in a 2016 Hyundai Sonata was initially involved in a separate crash on the freeway. The vehicle reportedly spun out near Crossroads Parkway. Next, the driver in the Hyundai continued driving eastbound in the westbound lanes at high speed. Eventually, the motorist collided with four other vehicles including a 2015 Toyota Corolla occupied by the child who died on scene.

Rafael Zarate, of, Moreno Valley, was driving the Corolla. He suffered major injuries to his face and was transported by paramedics to LAC+USC Medical Center.

Also, a 55-year-old Pico Rivera man driving an involved semi-truck complained of minor pain to his right shoulder. However, a second truck driver and a man driving a 2020 Kia Rio did not report injuries.

The suspect then exited his or her vehicle and fled on foot.

Investigators are working on the case and will determine fault for the Pomona crash on the 60 Freeway.
