Fatal Accident on US-50 Near Ice House Road Near Placerville
Woman Dead; Man, Two Children Injured in Crash on El Dorado Freeway in Riverton, El Dorado County
PLACERVILLE, Calif., (May 27, 2026) — A tragic accident resulted in injuries and a fatality in Riverton when a gray SUV drove off the roadway and into the American River on US-50 East, just east of Ice House Road in El Dorado County.
The deadly collision occurred during a downpour at a curve in the highway around 4:03 p.m. on Thursday, May 26th, roughly 21 miles east of Placerville, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The incident, which occurred on the eastbound side of Highway 50, involved a Hyundai SUV that left the road and ended up submerged in water, approximately 500 feet from the initial point of departure. Two adults and two children were in the vehicle at the time of the collision. Some good Samaritans rushed in to help the family before help arrived, likely saving lives, police said.
Emergency crews were dispatched promptly including the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF) which was notified at 4:23 p.m., and the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office (EDSO) was en route with lights and sirens (Code 3) as indicated in the incident log.
Efforts to extract the vehicle from the water were initiated immediately upon arrival, but tragically, the female driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. Meanwhile, three passengers, including the man and two children, were seriously injured in the collision and taken to Marshall Hospital.
Authorities are asking any witnesses to come forward as the investigation into the circumstances of the crash continues. Details such as the driver’s speed, weather conditions, and any potential mechanical failures are under assessment.
