Woman, 39, Struck, Killed Riding Bike in Bakersfield
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Sept. 19, 2023) — A fatal bicycle accident in Bakersfield happened Tuesday morning on South Union Avenue.
The deadly crash occurred around 6:12 a.m. on Sept. 19th, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Someone called 911 to report the crash to the Bakersfield Communications Center at South Union Avenue and Garden Drive, according to Bakersfield Now.
CHP officials and paramedics responded and located the injured woman and a bicycle at the scene.
Investigators determined the 39-year-old Bakersfield woman had been riding her bicycle eastbound, crossing northbound South Union Avenue. Meanwhile, a woman driving a northbound 2010 Toyota Corolla on South Union Avenue struck her in the No. 1 lane.
The vehicle was traveling around 45 to 50 mph at the time of the crash.
Authorities do not know why the woman on the bicycle crossed into the path of the Toyota. The driver told authorities she was unable to avoid a collision and struck the woman.
The bicycle rider suffered major injuries and died on scene.
