(UPDATED OCT. 8) BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Sept. 30, 2024) — One person is dead, and another person was hospitalized Saturday when a pickup struck their parked car on East Truxtun Avenue in east Bakersfield.

The victim has been identified as Lorena De La Torre-Luna, 47, of Bakersfield.

The deadly crash occurred between Miller Street and Robinson Street at 11:14 p.m. on Sept. 28th, according to news reports and the Bakersfield Police Department.

Police responded to the two-vehicle collision where a driver in a westbound Dodge Durango pickup truck had rear-ended a parked car. The vehicles were located on the north curb of 1200 East Truxtun Avenue, the report said.

Authorities located the deceased driver of the parked car and a passenger with major injuries. Paramedics transported the injured passenger to a nearby hospital where they were listed in critical condition.

The driver of the Dodge, Martin Alameda Sanchez, 25, was detained by security officers working in the area.

Police questioned the driver and are working on the case to determine if speed and alcohol were factors in the fatal Bakersfield crash on Truxtun Avenue.

They later found out the unlicensed driver had more than three times the legal limit of alcohol or 0.08%.in his system after allegedly drinking a 12-pack of Modelo 12-ounce beer cans. One hour after the collision, his breath samples registered a BAC of 0.257 and 0.262%, according to police records.

At his court hearing, the suspect plead not guilty to second-degree murder, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, DUI causing injury, and driving without a license or insurance.

The Kern County Coroner’s Office later identified the woman who died as Lorena De La Torre-Luna.

Witnesses are asked to contact the Bakersfield Police Department at 661-327-7111.
