Man in Sleeping Bag Run Over; DUI Suspect Arrested
BERKELEY, Calif. (Oct. 2, 2024) — A suspected DUI driver allegedly who ran over a man sleeping in a parking lot roundabout at Aquatic Park in Berkeley early Wednesday morning has been arrested.
Police are investigating the fatal collision involving a pedestrian and a driver under the influence that happened around 4:35 a.m. on Oct. 2nd, 2024, according to NBC Bay Area News.
The 69-year-old male victim was in a sleeping bag that was partially in the roadway. The unlicensed driver ran over the person and then stopped.
A witness helped the driver try to get the car off the victim who was sleeping at or near at tent at the scene and a call was made to 911 for help.
Paramedics from the Berkeley Fire Department responded, but were unable to save the victim who died at the scene.
Meanwhile, police arrested the driver, Miguel Davila-Huizar, 40, on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter, driving without a valid license, and DUI causing bodily injury.
The suspect is being held at Berkeley Jail in lieu of $140,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned in court on Friday, Oct. 4th.
The case remains under investigation.
