3 Killed, 2 Injured in Crash at Railroad Crossing on Orwood Road
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, Calif. (June 27, 2022) — A fatal Brentwood crash involving an Amtrak train and a silver SUV or van happened Sunday at an unmarked Orwood Road railroad crossing at Byron Highway.
Three people are dead and two others seriously injured following the two-vehicle crash on Sunday, June 26th, according to the East Contra Costa Fire Department and KGO.
The three women who died in the crash are identified as Julia Mondragon, 41, of Dixon; Maria Nieves, 72, of Dixon; and Mercedes Regalado, 51, of Antioch, according to the Contra Costa coroner’s office.
Paramedics responded and rushed two men with serious injuries to John Muir Medical Center, according to fire officials. The child also had serious injuries and was airlifted to Oakland Children’s Hospital. A fourth person suffered moderate injuries. There were no injuries from passengers or staff aboard the train.
The location where they crash occurred is known for train versus vehicle collisions. The group riding in the vehicle were driving down a long dirt driveway to a vineyard property for fundraiser being held there for the family of a man who died unexpectedly last week.
Indeed, fire department officials say they respond to this location about twice a year because there is no traffic guard at the location.
The cause of the Amtrak train crash and liability remains under investigation.
