One Dead, 3 Injured in Collision on I-5 Freeway
SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. (Oct. 23, 2024) — A fatal crash happened early Wednesday on the southbound Interstate 5 Freeway near the Coaster Station in Camp Pendleton.
The two-vehicle collision occurred around 1:32 a.m. on Oct. 23rd, between Exit 62 (Las Pulgas) and Exit 54C (CR-521 Coast Highway), according to the California Highway Patrol dispatch.
A driver in a black Audi reportedly overturned onto its side after colliding with an SUV and then a parked a semi-truck, the report said.
Dispatchers received a 911 call from a man named Paul who told them he pulled one person out of a vehicle, but firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate others from both vehicles.
Two people from the SUV were airlifted to a trauma center due to serious injuries, but a third occupant from the same vehicle died at the scene. Meanwhile, the driver of the sedan was alone in that vehicle and was also hospitalized.
Tow trucks removed the damaged vehicles for evidence and all lanes of the freeway reopened by 5 a.m. this morning.
Investigators are working to determine fault for the fatal Camp Pendleton crash on the 5 Freeway.
