Man and Woman Killed in Crash with Suspected DUI Driver in Carlsbad
CARLSBAD, Calif. (Jan. 15, 2024) — Two people were killed early Saturday in an alleged DUI crash on the southbound Interstate 5 Freeway, north of Palomar Airport Road near Carlsbad.
The deadly crash involving three vehicles occurred at around 3:50 a.m. on Jan. 13th, according to a California Highway Patrol report.
Angela Hays, 28, of Corona, was traveling southbound in a gray Hyundai allegedly set off the collision when she crashed into a green Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV, NBC reports. The Jeep reportedly overturned and was struck a second time by a Nissan Altima in the HOV lane, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
A Richmond man driving the Jeep was gravely injured and transported by ambulance to a hospital where he later died. Meanwhile, his female passenger, who is also from Richmond, died at the scene of the crash. The two victims, who lived in Contra Costa County, have not yet been identified by the San Diego Medical Examiner.
The Nissan driver was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.
Angela Hays did not report any injuries, but she was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter. Police booked at the Vista Detention Facility.
