Man Struck, Killed in DUI Crash on I-5 Freeway
CARLSBAD, Calif. (April 28, 2022) – A fatal Carlsbad crash on the Interstate 5 Freeway late Wednesday night involved a suspected drunk driver who struck a man who pulled over to fix his car.
The crash happened just before 11:20 p.m. on April 27th, the California Highway Patrol said.
CHP officials report the victim pulled over on the right shoulder of southbound I-5 Freeway, near Cannon Road. The driver was apparently having trouble with his SUV.
While he was outside of his vehicle, a southbound sedan crashed into the back of the parked SUV, the CHP said.
During the crash, the victim became trapped and then dragged onto the freeway lanes.
Paramedics responded and conducted life-saving measures and transported the injured man to a hospital. Sadly, despite their efforts, he died from his injuries.
The San Diego Medical Examiner will identify the victim once his relatives are notified.
Meanwhile, the male driver of the car that struck the SUV was arrested on suspicion of DUI.
There are no other injuries or other vehicles involved.
