Fatal Chico Crash on Highway 99, Garden Brook Drive in Butte County
Head-on Collision on State Route 99 in Chico
CHICO, Calif. (Feb. 17, 2025) – A fatal, head-on crash on northbound Highway 99 happened Sunday night in the Chico area of Butte County.
The crash happened around 8:23 p.m. on Feb. 16th, just north of Chico and south of Garden Brook Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The drivers of a silver Lexus SUV and a black Kia were involved. A driver in a black Nissan sedan witnessed the crash and pulled over to call 911 for help.
The Butte County Fire Department responded and located at least two people with major injuries and transported one to Enloe Medical Center where they were airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center.
A second person was deceased at the scene of the crash and the coroner was requested. Meanwhile, police reported there was a dog in the Lexus, but it’s unknown if the animal survived the crash.
Tow trucks removed both vehicles for evidence. The Kia had its “engine bay completely crushed in” and major front-end damage, the report said.
Investigators are working to determine fault for the crash on Highway 99 in Chico and the roadway reopened to traffic by 10:43 p.m. the same night.
