Deadly Crash on State Route 4 in the Vine Hill Area
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, Calif., (Nov. 5, 2026) — A fatal collision occurred Thursday on Highway 4, near the I-680 interchange in the Vine Hill area of Contra Costa County.
The traffic accident resulted in the closure of all lanes and significant traffic delays. The incident took place around 5:01 p.m. on Nov. 5th between a black pickup truck and a red Kia sedan.
California Highway Patrol officials responded to the scene at the westbound section of Highway 4 just east of I-680. Initial reports indicate that the vehicles were blocking lanes 1 and 2, causing a complete halt in traffic flow. A SigAlert was issued shortly after 5:14 p.m. due to the blocked lanes, advising motorists to use alternate routes.
Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures, including CPR, but tragically, at least one fatality was confirmed. The identity of the deceased has yet to be released pending notification of family members.
Efforts to clear the scene began promptly, with the vehicles eventually moved to the right-hand shoulder, and all lanes were reopened by 5:30 p.m. Traffic, however, remained heavily congested in the area for some time.
The collision remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol, and authorities are urging any witnesses to come forward with information that may assist in determining the cause of the crash.
