Violent Collision Leaves One Dead in Orange County
COSTA MESA, Calif. (Nov. 20, 2024) — One person is dead after a six-vehicle crash late Tuesday night on the southbound 405 Freeway near Harbor Boulevard in Costa Mesa.
The freeway, the FasTrak lane, and the Harbor Boulevard on-ramp were closed for several hours creating a traffic nightmare for motorists due to the investigation and cleanup.
The collision left debris scattered across traffic lanes around 11:37 p.m. on Nov. 19th, according to the California Highway Patrol dispatch log.
It’s unknown at this time what led up to the collision involving four sedans, a white SUV, and a Chevrolet Express van. The cars involved included a silver Toyota Supra, a white Chevrolet Impala, and a black sedan. At least three or four vehicles were in the FasTrak lane and one vehicle overturned onto its roof, the report said.
Police suspect alcohol may be a factor in the case of at least one of the motorists.
Paramedics responded and confirmed one person dead at the scene and others were likely injured in the crash, but there are no further details.
Meanwhile, police issued a SigAlert and all southbound traffic lanes were closed. Traffic diverted off the freeway until around 7 a.m. the next day.
Tow trucks removed six vehicles from the freeway for evidence.
Investigators are working to determine liability for the fatal crash on the 405 Freeway.
